The hair becomes dry, rough and damaged when the cuticle gets damaged. The hair also loses its luster for the same reason. Damaged hair, as you might already know, get brittle and breaks easy. The other symptoms and signs of damaged hair include harsh hair texture, itchy scalp, split ends that prevent hair growth, and lack of elasticity. Also, tangled hair is very difficult to manage. And styling? You can forget about styling when your hair’s health condition is that bad!

The causes of damaged hair are well known, and yet people repeat the mistakes time and again. The most common reasons why our hair becomes dry, rough and brittle are, exposure to hot climate, exposure to cold climate, exposure to dry climate, use of heating tools such as straightener and blow dryers, excessive styling, exposure to the UV rays of the sun, lack of nutrition and moisture in the hair, swimming in chlorinated water, friction during sleep on pillowcases especially cotton pillowcases, use of harsh shampoos and soaps, and stress.

Your hair might also get damaged due to particular medical conditions, such as underactive thyroid, malnutrition, anorexia nervosa, and specific hereditary conditions.

1. Olive Oil

The first natural ingredient that comes to mind when you speak of treating damaged hair, is olive oil. Fueled with fatty acids and antioxidants, this carrier oil treats your damaged and wounded tresses by sealing the moisture in the cuticles.

Olive oil also contains vitamin E, which is a great moisturizer and nourisher. It will help protect your hair from further damage.

For the treatment, all you need to do is heat olive oil and massage it into your scalp. Now slowly apply it on your hair shafts. After you have massaged the hair properly for 10 to 15 minutes, you need to cover it with a warm towel. This will help the hair and scalp absorb the oil quickly and more effectively.

After about 30 minutes, shampoo your hair. Do not forget to condition it.

You can also prepare a hair mask by mixing a quarter of a cup of olive oil with half a cup of honey. Heat the mixture, and apply it on your hair. Leave the mask on for about half an hour, and then rinse it out thoroughly. Shampoo your hair with your regular shampoo.

2. Avocado

Avocado is a rich source of several nutrients; from vitamins and fats to proteins and natural oils, avocado has them all. Owing to these properties, the fruit serves as a great natural ingredient to prevent hair damage or cure the damage that has already been done.

Avocado hair masks help soften our hair by hydrating it and making it more flexible. The free radical damage caused to the hair when it is exposed to the UV rays of the sun can also be prevented by applying avocado coats.

For people with shoulder-length hair, mix the pulp of half a ripe avocado with two teaspoons of virgin olive oil. Now blend the ingredients well to form a thin mixture of smooth consistency. Now apply this mask on the hair and leave it on for roughly an hour.

Wash your hair with lukewarm water and let it air dry.

The other mask that you can apply on your hair requires you to mic a ripe avocado and an egg yolk. Also add some coconut milk to prepare the paste. Now apply this mask on your scalp and hair shafts thoroughly, and leave it on for about an hour. Rinse off the mask with look warm water and wash your hair with your regular shampoo.

3. Egg

The next treatment that you can perform to cure your damaged hair at home involves eggs. Eggs are rich in nutrients, which makes them a great nourisher for damaged and dehydrated hair. The protein, minerals and essential fatty acids in egg can return the natural shine of your hair and make your hair stronger and glossier.

The egg whites too are great for our hair. They contain enzymes which can cleanse our hair and the scalp making it shinier in the process.

You can whisk an egg, and apply it on your scalp. Now gently massage it into your hair. Cover your hair with a clean shower cap. Leave the egg on for about half an hour, and then wash it off with your regular shampoo.

The other treatment that you can try requires you to beat two eggs and add half cup of unflavored yogurt into the mix. Add about two tablespoons of almond oil and mix well. Apply the creamy pack on your hair and massage well. Leave the mask on for 30 minutes, and then rinse it off with lukewarm water and your regular shampoo.

4. Aloe Vera

The next treatment involves aloe vera leaves that help cure damaged hair effectively in no time. The gel has humectant properties and also contains enzymes, amino acids, vitamin C and vitamin E.

According to Medical New Today,

“Vitamin E has long been recognized for its ability to improve your skin and hair health. Potent antioxidants called tocotrienols are found in vitamin E, and those tocotrienols contribute to a healthier scalp.

2010 clinical study found that using tocotrienol supplements improved the hair health of people with alopecia. These supplements also helped prevent hair loss.

Vitamin E is available in capsule form and as a liquid. It’s easy to incorporate vitamin E into your diet by eating wheat germ, spinach, kale, and even almonds. Some people choose to rub vitamin E oil directly onto their skin or scalp in the belief that it will speed cell regeneration if topically applied.”

 Scoop out the gel from an aloe vera leaf and apply it on your scalp and your hair. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, and then thoroughly rinse your hair with cool water. You can use your regular condition before your last rinse.

5. Hibiscus

According to Ayurveda, the hibiscus flower can be used to prepare an amazing homemade treatment for damaged hair that not only improves hair growth, but also enhances the quality of hair.

Heat about 10 washed hibiscus flowers and add a cup of virgin coconut oil. Boil until the flowers are charred. Now apply this oil on your scalp and the hair shafts, and massage for about 10-odd minutes. Wash the hair with lukewarm water after 30 minutes, and apply your regular conditioner.

The other treatment that you can try at home involves grinding about 4 hibiscus leaves and two hibiscus flowers. Add some water and prepare a thin mix. Apply this mix on your hair and leave it on for 20 minutes. Now rinse it off with lukewarm water and let it air dry.

6. Honey

Honey masks are very popular treatment for hair care. The nourishment that the ingredient provides your hair is mind-blowing. It not only adds moisture to your locks, bur seals the moisture into the hair cuticles, thus making them healthy from within.

You need to mix a quarter of a cup of honey with some water to create a thin paste. Now dampen your hair and apply the diluted honey paste. Leave it on for about half an hour, and then rinse it out with lukewarm water.

7. White Vinegar

White vinegar can help you treat your damaged hair in no time. The clarifying properties of the ingredient helps cleanse the scalp by getting rid of the built up residue and grease. It also seals the moisture into the hair cuticle. It, therefore, makes the hair softer and the growth stronger.

For the treatment, you need to mix a cup of distilled white vinegar with three cups of water. Now use this mix for the last rinse after you are done with conditioning.
