If you have a bum that can give Kim K a run for her money, then it maybe time to rejoice. According to a new study, women with big bums have smarter children than flat-bummed women.
The study conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh has found that a baby’s brain development depends on the fat supplies located in their mom’s behinds and thighs. Plus, the amount of fat stored there might directly influence the intelligence of the child. It’s been found that the extra fat in this area allows a woman to store additional nutrients that are passed on to the baby through breastfeeding.

The findings of the study have been published in ‘Why Women Need Fat,’ written by Dr William D Lassek, M.D. Speaking to The Sunday Times, he said,
“You need lots of fat to make a nervous system and the fats in these areas [buttocks and thighs] are also enriched in DHA [docosahexaenoic acid] which is a particularly important component in the human brain.”

According to Lassek, the fat accumulated around the bum and thights is particularly hard to shift after childbirth because evolution has made our bodies accrue these fats and not let them go for as long as possible for the good of our children.
According to the study,
“Upper-body fat has negative effects and lower-body fat has positive effects on the supply of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential for neurodevelopment. Thus, waist-hip ratio (WHR), a useful proxy for the ratio of upper-body fat to lower-body fat, should predict cognitive ability in women and their offspring.”

The study further notes that,
“the unusual fattiness and fat deposition patterns of reproductive-aged women may be the result of natural selection for the ability to support fetal and infant neurodevelopment – a selection pressure that was much weaker in our close primate relatives.”
According to previous studies, women with big bums tend to have lower cholesterol levels and more likely to produce hormones to metabolize sugar. So, they are less likely to develop high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease.
However, women with flat-bottoms don’t need to despair because a child’s intelligence is influenced by several other factors other than just their mom’s bum. So, all is not lost. 😉
