Life was blissful for the McHugh family until 2010 when Ken was diagnosed with neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer. His condition has ever since been worsening.
Between grappling with the fatal disease and enjoying the company of his loved ones for as long as he can, he has come to dwell on his situation more and more. His wife Tammy remarks,
“Over the years he’s begun to think of the milestones that he would sincerely miss,” Tammy said, “and of course [their kids’] weddings were a major thing that brought us much sadness when we thought about him not joining us.”
Upon learning about the same, Team CMMD, a local charity organized a family wedding for the McHughs on Oct 3rd, complete with formal wear, limo and a delicious Italian feast.

While Tammy and Ken were married again- their son Dylan walking Tammy down the aisle- before the very-much-in-love couple renewed their vows, Ken, afterward, took turns to walk each of his kids down the aisle and gave them a few significant presents. These included a letter that he asked them to open on their wedding day and a handkerchief with a stunning blue embroidered pattern that he earnestly hoped the kids would use as their ‘something blue’ whenever their big day came knocking.

It was amazing how Ken found it in himself to gather so much energy for the event.
“He just miraculously gathered the strength,” Tammy said. “Without a walker, without a cane, he walked each of them down the aisle. But he spent the next two days in bed.”
Having been unable to work for five years, Ken has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money to meet the expenses of his family, primarily to fund his kids’ education. In an emotional section of the post, he writes,
“There are times I just think it would be less of a burden on my wife, my children, on everyone, if I just stopped taking the medicine and allowed myself to die quicker. It certainly would reduce the expenses. But with each milestone I’m granted to be a part of in my children’s lives, the greater my will to live grows.”

And we have no doubt it’s true. Tammy concurs,
“We were all concerned it would be full of sorrow but actually it turned out quite beautiful. We were happy and in the moment. There was so much laughter and love. It was a day of love.”
Truly!
