Let’s Be Together For Another Night…

Let’s get together under a blanket of perfect midnight velvet for just another night.

Let the encrusted stars envy the shine in our eyes for just another night.

Let the wind steal away every care in our minds for just another night.

Let the moonlight splash over us like the ocean can wait for just another night.

Let the darkness sneak into our bed for a sliver of light for just another night.

Let’s be together for just another night.

I know this are the last moments I have with you. The deepest, worst fear in my mind has come true. You are leaving- and with that, you are leaving behind new wounds atop old scars, making my heart a giant scab that is unlikely to heal as it struggles to pump blood into failing lungs and a wrecked soul.

I have known this for a while now. I have had time to absorb your choice, time to come to terms with your decision. I have tried, during this time, to solder each wire of my broken heart back into place so it can strike a rhythm I recognize- but your presence here, tonight, undoes all of that. All you have to do is touch me and every piece I put back together comes undone.

But I am not sad. We have lied to each other a long time- lied about how we fit together, how we were the best of friends, how we belonged with each other from another time until the end of time…and it is about time the lies must end. We never fit in together, always off by a little- as you reached out for tea and I poured my steaming black angst in a cup. You tried to fill your breath in balloons so I could smile and I tried to pull off some tech-fueled surprise (because I wanted you to know I am learning for you, from you). We were never the best of friends because friends don’t talk like we did, they don’t fall into each other so freely and fully- so they can never fall for another. Friends don’t hold each other to never let go. You were a soulmate, sure. A soulmate I can never be with- but that’s where the last lie comes off. We were meant to meet, but weren’t meant to be.

I hope you are happy- wherever it is that you want to be, whatever it is that you plan to do. I hope you are happy- however you wish to lead your life from here on. I hope you are happy- whoever you choose to share it with.

But in this moment, I want you to be happy, with me. One last time. Take me as yours for another night. Fill me with your being so deep I cannot not miss you after you are gone. Give me your self for just another night- and let me wake up to your absence that feels just enough to carry through. Let the doors shut out the world for just another night, let everything save the two of us melt away in the darkness for just another night. Let your touch stay on my skin as our memories fill my soul for life.

I want you to carve yourself into my body as whispers of sweet nonsense pour in between deep kisses. I want us to take our love making out and beyond silken sheets and petals- so our gazes can just linger on one another long after we’ve made sweet love, our voices become all that softer as we pull closer and our shy grins give us away. Let the world see the love we’ve never worn before- just another time, this one last time.

Let me know I can wake up to the smile your dreams leave behind- so I can make that same black coffee (you didn’t quite like) with the sugar I stole off your lips- so I can taste those dreams through the day until I can sink in them again for a theft you turned the keys over for…

I know I ask for too much. I know it is silly, because it is the end. But drape your arm around my waist, lean in for a kiss yet hold back as the moment stretches into eternity. Glide your hands up my arm and touch my face ever so lightly, tuck that playful lock of hair behind my ear and tell me you love me. Tell me that- this one last time. Let me know I will always have you, even as we are drawing to a close.

Spill those sweet words in my soul and let them echo in my being for as long as my heart retains its beat.

We’ve braved the storm, my love- the rain’s drenched us both, and I want to stay back and watch the rainbow shine far and bright even as your hands slip away. Give me that for just another night.
