DDLJ has completed 1000 weeks since release. While YRF has released a new trailer for the movie (hyperlink), we look at what has happened to the cast of the iconic film in the intervening time. Some have become massive successes, some have carved a niche while some others have moved into other roles in the film and television industry.

Anaita Shroff (Sheena, Simran’s friend)
Role: She’s the hottie with whom SRK flirts to get Kajol all riled up

Trivia: Is married to Homi Adajania, the director of Cocktail and Finding Fanny
Anaita was always interested in styling and built a career around it. She worked at Vogue, L’Officiel and Elle. She has also been the stylist for Dhoom, Dhoom 2, Dhoom 3, Being Cyrus and Cocktail among other movies
Arjun Sablok (Roby, Raj’s friend)
Role: He’s the geeky friend with glasses, who’s an accomplice in the beer-stealing scene
Trivia: Made his directorial debut with the TV series Hum Ko Ishq Ne Maara
After the brief appearance, Arjun went on to direct Na Tum Jaano Na Hum with Hrithik in the lead and Neal N Nikki with Uday Chopra and Tanisha. Both were box office duds
Karan Johar (Rocky, Raj’s friend)
Role: He’s the timid friend whose cap Raj keeps knocking off
Born: 1972
Trivia: He has helped write the screenplay of DDLJ and is a Master’s degree holder in French
Karan Johar of course, needs no introduction. He won the Filmfare award for best director for his debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He has gone on to wear many hats – director, producer, screenplay writer, talk show host and anchor and is probably the most well-networked person in Bollywood
Achala Sachdev (Simran’s grandma)
Role: Simran’s grandmother, whose dying wish is to see Simran married

Trivia: She is the actress in the classic Aye Meri Zohra Jabeen song from Waqt
Achala Sachdev has acted in evergreen classics such as Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Mera Naam Joker. She was last seen in 2002’s Na Tum Jaano Na Hum
Mandira Bedi (Preeti Singh)
Role: She plays Parmeet Sethi’s sister, who is smitten by Shah Rukh Khan
Born: 1972
Trivia: She is married to Raj Kaushal, who is the director of Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi with Dino Morea and Rinke Khanna and Shaadi Ke Laddoo
Mandira made her debut in the Doordarshan’s series Shanti, where she played the titular character. DDLJ was her movie debut. But she made her mark when she became the face of IPL season 3 in her noodle-strap blouses, fascinating a whole section of society. She has now started designing and debuted her saree collection in Lakme India Fashion Week.
Amrish Puri (Chaudhry Baldev Singh, Simran’s father)
Role: Simran’s stern father who terrifies and loves his kids in equal measure

Trivia: He got his start in Bollywood only when he was 40 years old
Born in Lahore, Amrish Puri worked with many notable playwrights of his day including Girish Karnad. With one of the most recognizable voices in Hindi cinema, he has acted in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil and Hollywood movies. He had got 8 Filmfare award nominations in his career
Farida Jalal (Lajwanti, Simran’s mother)
Role: Simran’s loving mother who believes in being a friend to her grown up daughters

Trivia: She was the finalist of the United Film Producers Talent Hunt along with Rajesh Khanna. While he went on to make a mark as a leading man, she became a sought after character actor
Farida Jalal has essayed many memorable characters in the 100+ movies she has acted in, including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and many TV series including the popular Dekh Bhai Dekh. She was last seen in Student of the Year in 2012
Anupam Kher (Dharamvir Malhotra, Raj’s father)
Role: Raj’s chilled out father who advised his son to go live his share of ‘jawaani’ too, setting the benchmark for ‘cool’ dads in one sentence

Anupam Kher is still very much the professional actor, working prolifically in commercial and offbeat cinema with equal ease. He runs a popular acting school called ‘An Actor Prepares’. He has also straddled Hollywood and Bollywood, with his last stint there being as a shrink on Silver Linings Playbook
Satish Shah (Ajit Singh)
Role: Parmeet Sethi’s father, who is expecting Simran to be his daughter-in-law
Born: 1951
Satish Shah has also had a long career with memorable roles including the dead body in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. His most memorable television outing has been as Indravadhan Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. He was last seen in Humshakals in 2014
Himani Shivpuri (Kammo Kaur)
Role: She is the unwed aunt who is loud yet tender, whose saree selection is helped by Shah Rukh’s Raj
