Home remedies for tired eyes

Here are the 9 best home remedies that will immediately relieve your worn-out eyes.

1. Eye Massage

One of the best natural ways to treat tired eyes is to gently massage the lids. Doing this on a daily basis will enhance the circulation of blood to your eyes. It will also help relax the ciliary muscles that tend to get tired when your eyes are strained for a long time.

Massaging the eyelids gently will also help you stimulate the tear glands. This averts the irritating and painful condition of dry eyes.

To massage your eyes, use the first to fingers and gently caress the eyelids in a circular motion. You should also massage the eyebrows for 20 seconds as they tend to get tense too.

Begin by massaging the lower bone that lies against your lower eyelid. Do this for about 30 seconds.

You should then massage the forehead and the cheek bones.

This remedy should be done twice a day.

Pro tip: Use olive oil (just a few drops) to massage the lids more smoothly.

2. Cupping or palming

Another great home remedy, palming will relax your tired eyes in no time. If you spend a lot of time working in front of the computer or read on your kindle, then this treatment can be very beneficial for you.

Here the objective it to fashion such a restful state of comfort for the eyes that they do not get tired too easily.

Begin by sitting in a comfortable position. Make sure to keep the spinal cord erect. Now rib your hands together quick so that they become warm. Now close your eyes lightly and rest your palms over the eyelids. Do not apply pressure. Enjoy this darkness and warmth for 20 seconds.

Remove your palms from your eyes and open your eyes slowly. Look around for 10 seconds, and then repeat the remedy. You should do this three times a day, 5 times at one sitting.

3. Sunning

The third natural remedy on our list is sunning. This is a great technique to give comfort to tired eyes. The Vitamin D from the sun is great for our eyes and for our general health.

If you are worried about getting tanned, then you should do this remedy early in the morning so that you receive only the early rays of the morning sun, which are the most beneficial.

At dawn, stand on your terrace or balcony where you can catch the early rays of the sun. Close your eyes and let the rays warm your eyelids. Now keeping your eyes closed, move your eyes up and down, clockwise and anticlockwise. You should also move them from right to left and again left to right.

This technique should be done for 5 minutes. You can follow the process with the remedy of palming that we just discussed.

If you wear contact lenses or specs, then during the sunning process take them off to get the maximum help for your eyes. This is also important when you do the palming therapy.

4. Eye exercises

Eye exercises, if done regularly, can help give the necessary rest to your tired and irritated eyes. These exercises improve the circulation of blood to your eyes. This, in turn, makes the eyes muscles stronger and more flexible.

These eye exercises also help enhance attention and concentration.

Take a sharp pencil, and hold it at a foot’s distance from your eyes. Now try to focus your eyes on the pointed end of the pencil. Now bring the pencil a little closer to the eyes (says half a foot’s distance) slowly. Now focus. Again move it away from your eyes and try to focus.

You should repeat this exercises 15 times a day.

The other exercise that you can try to help against eye strain and to also improve eyesight is rolling the eyes in circular motion while not moving your head. First roll the eyes in clockwise direction for 10 times, and then go counterclockwise for 10 times. You can follow this with the palming therapy.

You can do this once every three hours for relief.

5. Cold water therapy

The next remedy involves cold water. This is extremely beneficial for those trying to heal their strained and tired eyes.

The cold water therapy will not only improve the circulation of blood to your eyes, but will also relax the tired eye muscles. The remedy is also good for relief from swollen and puffy eyes.

Close your eyes and splash cold water on the lids and your face when you feel your eyes are tired. This has an instant effect on tired eyes. If the condition is not mild and you need something more concentrated, then get yourself a clean and soft washcloth. Dip it in a bowl of cold water. Wring it out and place it on your closed eyelids. Leave it on for a minute and then repeat again.

This can be done as and when you feel your eyes need a cold water treatment. You will be the best judge.

6. Warm compress

The next remedy on our list of home remedies for tired eyes is warm compress. This relieves strain in no time, and calms the irritation in the eyes caused by exhaustion.

Warm compress is also a great way to deal with the swelling that occurs due to an eye sty.

Take some warm water in a cup. Now dip a clean and soft washcloth in this warm water. Wrong it out and place it on your closed eyelids. Make sure the cloth is not unbearably hot. Leave it on for a minute and repeat the process. If you have a sty, then you need to change the washcloth when you repeat.

This treatment should be done once a day for best results.

Now take the tea bags and place one in the fridge and the on other on your eyes for a warm treatment. You will be using the cold tea bag for a cool treatment which should follow the warm treatment.

You can repeat this as and when you like.

Eye strain causes terrible headaches, but drinking 2 cups of hot chamomile tea a day can give instant relief from these headaches.

8. Cucumber

Another quick remedy for tired eyes is cucumber slices. Cucumber is an effective astringent, and so, it clams tired eye muscles in no time.

Cucumber can also be used to help with swollen eyes as well as dark circles caused by poor sleep patterns.

Place a small-size cucumber in the fridge for 30 minutes. Now take it out and slice it in thick round pieces. Place two pieces on your eyes and keep rest of the pieces in the fridge. You should repeat this twice a day for the results you want.

The last remedy on this list is whole milk. Whole milk is a good remedy for tired eyes because of the fat in it. This fat soothes our eyes and is also effective in curing itchiness in the eyes caused by infection.

Begin by dipping a clean ball of cotton in a cup of chilled milk. Now place the ball on your closed eyes and rub gently. Lie down and keep your eyes closed for a while. This will immediately relax your exhausted eyes and give them the relaxation they need.
