To let the love flowing in my veins spill through beautiful syllables, reassembled in my hand to say just how much you are in me, all the time!
Ask someone to write you a love letter and they’d give you a ‘did ya smoke somethin’’ look! In a world where all the love swelling in one’s heart can be captured by a yellow grinning face with hearts for eyes, love letters are pretty much dead. After all, when the fingers can swirl about the touch screen, type a maximum of 140 characters, chip in a few or a lot of emojis and get done with expressing love, why waste time on writing love letters, huh?

After all, life’s moving at a manic pace and one needs to catch up. Where does one have the time to pick symbolic stationery, spend a few solitary hours to pen down feelings, take care to write it in your best hand, make it wear the scent he loves, fold and seal it in a crisp envelope, and mark it with the name of your beloved in bold cursive – when GoT is intent on killin’ off all your beloved characters one by one! For now, love texts, love Snapchats, and lovestagrams will have to do!

But will the thought of a chat, long lost in the muddle of abbreviated texts, the attachment on an email, or worse, the disappearing ‘moment’ on Snapchat ever compare to the undeniable appeal of a love letter, held in one’s wrinkly hands, as one thinks back on the love that has endured for 40 years and shall always be?
Never.

There’s a reason writing a love letter trumps most forms of romantic expression – coz there’s nothing quite like your soul breathing on paper. When a love letter arrives, the envelope is gently torn as if undressing the person who addressed it – the fingers tracing the outline of the words, as if feeling the contour of the form that breathed life into them – and the words are then poured in through the eyes, the letter pressed against the heart – as if making love to the soul who loves him in return.

And if you still aren’t convinced, here are some pure joys of writing a love letter to the one you love:
1. The bliss and kiss of solitude

In an age when endless (and perhaps, mindless) rounds of texts are shuffled back and forth whilst one is busy with friends, working on an assignment, catching a re-run of Breaking Bad, or perhaps, even taking a dump, a love letter needs one’s complete attention, and hence represents the entire length and breadth of one’s feelings – without any distraction to take away from its intensity. And someone who receives the same among a dozen bills that need to be paid right away will only sneak away to his room to read the letter alone, instead of gleaning over a screen, in half-a-presence whilst a group of friends make some lewd jokes!
2. Yours and yours alone
There is an undeniable power in the name etched on the envelope in that wriggly, tiny handwriting. It says that the person has meant this token of love to be yours for eternity. Not to forget that your name inside would probably have a dozen terms of endearment splattered throughout! Plus it’s great to see it signed Love, Yours <insert name of beloved> at the end too, isn’t it? <3 <3
3. Because the written word is forever

An email may get lost in the clutter of your inbox, a text simply float away in the ether of the app’s capacity for backup, but a tangible token of love – a handwritten love letter is something you can hold in your palm, pore over under the moonlight, and kiss before going to sleep. There’s something incredibly romantic about the enduring permanence of the written love letter, as it shapes the words that fill the hearts that love with their beat!
4. It’s the thought that counts

In an age that is bedazzled with the digital, it is incredibly thoughtful to find the time to choose stationery that shall convey meaning, pour your heart out on it, and seal it with lots of love, for the one and only you’d do it for! And it COUNTS!
5. The special touch

A photograph embossed on the background or the dried rose-petals from a former anniversary, spraying the scent you wear all the time or tying a million heart confetti strung about in an unending chain of messages with the letter- are just some of the ways to write a love letter that will be all the more special because it carries love- true, deep and infinite!
6. Because they hold a gift like none else

A love letter is a timeless promise of TIME- and not just any time, but time that gives someone one’s undivided attention. And THAT is the best gift you can ever give.

7. Because that handwriting speaks volumes

Unlike the signature on a bill or the scribble of a to-do list, you actually witness the words placed with a purposive hand. The kind of writing that the person took special care to not mess up- the kind of writing where words were chosen carefully and reassembled to resemble the ‘love’ that they have for you. And it is a GIFT in itself!
8. Because it’s a REAL way of saying ‘I’ll always love you’
You know this by now, don’t you?
