Most people have baseline criteria that their potential partners must fulfill in order to pass the initial test and actually begin a relationship with them. For some, it’s impeccable grammar or basic hygiene, while others seek a special someone with an easygoing attitude and a sense of humor. For me, a particular non-negotiable quality shines brighter than all of the others: they must be a dog lover. Whether you have a dog or not, it is important to find a partner who is attached to our furry friends because it speaks to their character in subtle ways.

To prove my point, I have put together a list of some reasons why dating a dog lover is much better than dating someone who isn’t.
1. They are bound to be easygoing

One of the perks of dating a dog lover is that they come with very little emotional baggage or melodrama. When you love dogs, you don’t only love the fact that they are fluffy and affectionate, but also the various quirks about them. In order to handle the idiosyncrasies of your dog on a daily basis, you have to be easygoing; if you’re not, you will probably lose your mind. Therefore, dating a dog lover is bound to be a chilled out experience, free of anxiety and tension. In fact, dogs themselves are stress-busters, so just being in the presence of them with their dog will make you feel lighter, happier, and more laid back.
2. They are responsible

Dog owners and even dog lovers have extensive experience when it comes to taking care of another creature. This caretaking process is careful and continuous. This gives them valuable experience in looking after someone they love and instill within them a sense of responsibility. You know that they are going to be responsible when it comes to you, or even your children, because taking care of others comes naturally to them. Relationship goals, anyone?
3. They love cuddling and are willing to share the bed

This is probably the greatest perk of dating a dog person. Most people don’t like their partners hugging them or cuddling with them occasionally. You will not face this problem when you are dating a dog lover because, quite frankly, dogs love to cuddle. Cuddling comes with the job of raising a pup, so they are pros at canoodling by default. Rest assured, you will never have to worry about impending fights about who is going to sleep where because they will always be willing to share their bed. You can jump right in and cuddle to your heart’s content—probably with their dog lying on the other side of the bed.
4. They love doggy kisses

People who don’t like dogs think that “doggy kisses”—those wet, sloppy kisses where dogs slobber all over you to express their unconditional love— are gross and unneeded. Those who like dogs think that those people are gross for not embracing such a true sign of love. When you date a dog lover, they not only do not mind you kissing your dog (because they will kiss them too probably,) but they also don’t mind being kissed with the same mouth. If these aren’t the traits of a perfect partner, I don’t know what is.
5. They are happier, healthier people

I am not saying this because every single dog person I have seen is a happy, active individual. However, it has been scientifically established that people who own dogs are much happier and healthier. Why shouldn’t they be? With their playful attitude and affectionate loyalty, dogs bring instant happiness into your lives. These traits are bound to rub off on their owners, and just their presence will bring about happiness. Taking care of a dog doesn’t only make you physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well.

6. They know how to handle stress

Even though owning a dog is mostly about cuddling and playing around, it can also be very stressful at times. The responsibilities entailed with owning a dog and the care and attention required when they are ill or injured can be very stressful experiences that dog owners have to handle frequently. If they lost their minds every time their dogs had a problem, they would quickly break down owning a day. They will also bring this levelheadedness to your relationship—all thanks to their furry little friend.
7. They won’t complain about spending money on your dog

If both of you love dogs, communication in the relationship becomes much easier. They will know how difficult it is to maintain a dog, and more importantly, they won’t complain about the amount of money that has to be spent on the dog, because chances are that they spend about the same. This saves you from a lot of unnecessary fights and frustration (and makes it easier to manage your expenses properly too!)
8. They are infinitely more forgiving and patient

When you have a dog, being ruthless, short-tempered or impatient is not an option. Loving a dog automatically instills qualities such as patience, forgiveness, and a general caring attitude in people, which makes them the best, most ideal kind of partners for romantic relationships as well. When they are forgiving and patient, your fights get solved quickly and easily because you cannot bear staying angry for too long. In fact, dog lover partners are super-patient when it comes to your shortcomings and problems because their dogs have taught them the virtues necessary to maintain a healthy relationship, both with dogs and other humans.
9. They will begin to look and act like their dog, in the best way possible

People believe that after some time, owners start looking like and behaving like their dogs. Unless you are a dog lover, you will not understand the advantages of this transformation until it happens to you or someone you know. Not only will a dog lover start looking like their dogs, but they will also adopt many of their positive personality traits as well. This means that dog lovers will become loyal, caring, happy, and playful by nature, changing for the better just by owning and loving their dog. Pretty cool!
10. They are infinitely more loving and social and caring

In order to own a dog or even to just lovingly interact with dogs frequently, a person has to be gentle, loving, and caring; otherwise dogs will dislike them and react by biting, barking or shying away. When you are dating someone who loves dogs and whom dogs love, you know that person will exude positivity and love—otherwise dogs wouldn’t love them in the first place! That person will also be excessively social, because it takes great social skills to walk up to strangers and their dogs, which dog lovers do all of the time.

With this list of reasons, I hope I have been able to establish why dating a dog lover is infinitely better than dating someone who is not. Not only are they more positive and loyal, but they also understand you on a whole different level. Most importantly, though, they are aware of the responsibilities that come with taking care of another living being, which makes them the perfect partners to get into a relationship with. So, grab your leash and hit the dog park – you never know when you’ll find that perfect person!
Good luck!
